A good summer of tourism shaped by the international situation

Tourist activity in Barcelona grew by around 6 % this summer as a result of an exceptional international situation, with particular problems in destinations such as Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey and in major European cities such as Paris and Brussels. Growth was even greater in Catalonia and Spain as a whole, where the same factors had an influence.

Montserrat, Sitges, Girona and Figueres, the most popular visits outside the city

Barcelona is a powerhouse that helps other destinations all over Catalonia to grow, thus redistributing the economic benefits of tourism around the region. Of the visitors who take advantage to see other places of interest, 30.1 % visit the Sanctuary of Montserrat, 19.9 % travel to Sitges, 8.2 % travel to Girona and 7.5 % go to Figueres to see Dalí’s work.

The ‘Barcelona Shopping Days’ return to enjoy the best shopping

Turisme de Barcelona, with the support of the Trade and Commerce Department of the city council, is launching the first autumn edition of the Barcelona Shopping Days campaign – from 26 September to 9 October – to promote the quality of the city’s shopping among citizens and visitors. The idea is to enjoy Barcelona and at the same time the diversity and vitality of its shopping.

Barcelona Bus Turístic promotes headphone recycling

With the aim of boosting awareness of the environment and sustainability among residents and visitors to the city, Barcelona Bus Turístic is promoting reuse of the headphones that its passengers use for listening to the commentary in different languages.

Support for the programme to clean marine rubbish from the city’s coastline

Turisme de Barcelona has signed up to the Marviva project to clean up, collect and classify the marine rubbish on the city’s shoreline. The scheme is currently being developed as a pilot-project in the Port of Barcelona and has the Barcelona Fishermen’s Guild as the body in charge of performing the task of collecting the waste from the sea bed and transporting it to the port. Once on dry land, the rubbish is weighed, measured, photographed and classified so it can be processed appropriately.

Personal stories
Patrici Bultó i Sagnier technical director of L’Aquàrium in Barcelona

“Barcelona must opt for a quality sea”

Passionate, optimistic and enquiring, Patrici Bultó moves around the facilities of L‘Aquàrium like a fish in water. He is convinced that the sea is a great mystery (we know just 200,000 of the 20 million species that are estimated to live in it) and it is at the same time a source of hope because marine life might help us to find remedies for many current illnesses. Therefore, he believes that Barcelona, as a leading city in the Mediterranean, must opt for a “quality sea” with the greatest possible biological wealth and for green tourism that can enjoy waters in “magnificent” condition.
