Having found its place among the world's top street food events, the next edition of Streat Helsinki takes place 17-20 March 2016. On the menu: a dip into street food preparation methods, new concepts and local specialities. What lies beyond the burger?
In 2014, Helsinki was in need of a street food revolution. Streat Helsinki was born, and the festival drove street food enthusiasts wild in both Finland and abroad. In 2015, Streat Helsinki grew into an 11-day-long feast calling together way over 30 000 street foodies and selling almost 55 000 portions.
In 2016, great street food can now be found in Helsinki on every day (and night) of the week. Street food entrepreneurs have anchored in the city year-round and Streat Helsinki has been joined by several independent street food events. Furthermore, numerous event organisers have assumed up-to-date street food as a crucial part of their event, for instance at music festivals.
Streat Helsinki 2016: from revolution to evolution to sustainability
Streat Helsinki 2016 is aiming for the next level of street food culture: addressing questions of ecology and sustainability, discovering fabulous new flavours, as well as developing and testing new methods of preparing food. The four festival days include three main events, with several side dishes.
The extravaganza kicks off on Thursday 17 March and Friday 18 March with the Streat Helsinki MASTERS evenings. These events look at street food from a new angle with the guidance of Finnish and international chefs. The theme is explored through ingredients and preparation methods, leading up to a communal cooking and dining experience. The MASTERS evenings are held at the Mothership of Work co-working hub.
The street food festival Streat Helsinki EATS is organised in the Tori Quarters on Saturday 19 March, 11am - 7pm. The participating twenty-or-so vendors are carefully curated with an emphasis on new dishes, cutting-edge preparation methods and completely new concepts. Each menu will also include bite-size sample dishes.
On Sunday 20 March, we step back to the roots of street food, meaning outdoor dishes and open-fire cooking. Streat Helsinki GRILLS will land at fixed and potential picnic and BBQ spots in the city, with featured chefs helping to discover outdoor tastes. The aim is in a fun, communal outing, and also in racking up experiences to further develop outdoor cuisine.
Open call for Streat Helsinki EATS vendors now running
Streat Helsinki EATS 2016 is hosting a smaller amount of vendors than in previous years. The selection criteria emphasize a novelty value in the form of new dishes, new concepts or, for instance, a new preparation method. In addition, each participant must include bite-size sample dishes on their menus. The street kitchens are required to use biodegradable tableware, or other ecologically sound serving solutions.

Event updates on the Streat Helsinki website
The refreshed Streat Helsinki website will be launched during the third week of February at streathelsinki.com. More information on the MASTERS evenings and the GRILLS day will be available by the end of February.
Streat Helsinki aims at celebrating street food and developing a fun, communal city. The goal is also to enhance collaboration and understanding among different players both in Finland and internationally. The main partner of Streat Helsinki is the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
