Whether you are a father or mother, grandma or grandpa: please, reveal this cavalcade of events to your child or grandchild, take him or her by the hand and join in to see, hear, move and wonder! Children’s Kuhmo Team is organising the Jolly July for the tenth time to thrill you and bring joy to children and to the whole family. What will be your picks from the offerings?

Once again, Jolly July will offer a real treat of activities in summer 2016. This year, Children’s Kuhmo with its Jolly July campaign will be organised for the tenth time, running from 28 June to 31 July. It will feature more than 70 cultural, playful and nature activities, designed for children, families and those young at heart. The initiators and main organisers of Jolly July – Juminkeko, Sommelo Ethno Music Festival, Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and Petola Visitor Centre have engaged 16 other partners to join in the Children’s Kuhmo Team. This year the partners are Hotel Kainuu, Kaesan Kotileipomo bakery, Kainuun Pirtti craft shop, Korpi Raikaa music association, Kuhmolainen Athletics Cup, Kuhmolaisen Tanssin Ystävät dance association, Kuhmon Kalamiehet fishing club, Kuhmon Melojat canoeing club, Kuhmo 4H Society, Kuhmo Hunters’ Association (Kuhmon Riistanhoitoyhdistys), SYKE Plus fitness club, Lentiira Village Society, Lentuan Luontotupa nature information hut, the Kuhmo branch of the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare (MLL), Tuupala Museum and Winter War Museum. Together these organisations have planned a 31 days’ month of full of music, poetry, handcrafts, sports, nature experiences and excursions.

The musical events of Jolly July are produced by the Sommelo Festival, the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and the Kuhmo Arts Centre. The Sommelo Festival will offer exhilarating folk music in the final concert of the young fiddlers' course. The Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival will serve treats of classical music: a children’s concert with a Noah’s Ark theme on 13 July, and several concerts performed by young students of the music courses. Also, don’t forget the Sommelo music courses for children and young people! The Summer Musicians of the Kuhmo Arts Centre will play classical, folk and popular music in their daily Coffee Matinees (Saturdays excluded) in the Café Juttua at 2 p.m. until 8 July. The Summer Musicians will put on their Big Children’s Concert on 28 June and a special Concert for Toddlers on 3 July.

You may acquaint yourself with the wildlife on the guided tours of the Petola Visitor Centre, where you will encounter Finland’s large carnivores and the forest reindeer safely in an exhibition setting. Petola will also organise two sing-along evenings of children’s songs at Lentuan Luontotupa (12 and 26 July). It is also worth while to keep in mind the Bug Excursion that will acquaint you with some of the local insects on 15 July. The 4H Club invites you to make pancakes and play outdoor games on the cosy lakeside of Syväjärvi on 5 July.

Joy of sport will be expected at the Kuhmolainen Athletics cup on 21 July, on the dance course of the Tanssin Ystävät Association on 4–7 July, on a playful triathlon contest of the SYKE Plus fitness club on 25 July, and on the Courtyard Olympics of the Lentiira Village Society on 9 July. The Kuhmo branch of MLL invites you to join in outdoor activities on July 6th, and the Kuhmo Hunters Association will organise a family gathering called "First catch your hare” on 8 July.

Information about The Kalevala, Finland’s national epic, is available at Juminkeko. On a number of days, there will be multimedia presentations or some other Kalevala-related activities, or crafting and games in Juminkeko. Visitors are always welcome to the exhibitions, library and book store of Juminkeko during opening hours.

The museums will put up special tours for children: on Wednesdays the young visitors are welcome to “Grandmother’s place” at Tuupala Museum, and children can learn about “Grandpa’s combats” at the Winter War Museum on Wednesdays (6, 13 and 20 July).

An early opening of Jolly July 2016 will take place on 28 June in the summer musicians’ children’s concert at the Kuhmo Arts Centre at 6 pm. At the closing of the Jolly July month, Korpi Raikaa Association and its partners will organise a Children’s Jolly Feast on the Kontio School courtyard on 30 July.

The underlying idea of Jolly July is to point out the importance of quality culture and nature experiences for favourable growth and development of the child to all who are dealing with children and young people. The organisers hope that these events will attract audiences and participants of all ages, for joint experiences of delight, inspiration or reflection will live on as pleasant memories far into the future.

Most of the events are free of charge, but advance registration, entrance or participation fee will be required in some of them. You will find further information in our brochure or web site.

The marketing and promotion of Jolly July has been sponsored by Kuhmon Osuuspankki bank and the local newspaper Kuhmolainen.

The Jolly July brochure has come out. Also this year its visual image is the work of Klaus von Matt.
