Meet Pascal Schmalen
Pascal was born in Sion and grew up in Crans near the golf course, his German parents had a restaurant, «Le Pavillon», in Montana. Since the age of seven, his life has always been centred around golf, as well as it being his main passion. Once he had finished his studies, he moved to Miami in the United States for 4 years, to totally dedicate himself to his passion. He spent three years as a professional player, and worked for a year for an events management company which organised golf tournaments. Since April 2015, he has been director at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club. He considers himself very lucky as his work is his passion, and he is now putting all of his energy into this wonderful club. Find out a bit more about him, and golf in Crans-Montana, in the following interview.
What are the golf courses you can play in Crans-Montana? How do you get there and book a game ?
The Severiano Ballesteros (18 hole) is the championship course which each year hosts the famous Omega European Masters (European Tour). The Jack Nicklaus (9 hole) is a wonderful course which has won the title «Most beautiful 9 hole course in Switzerland» on several occasions. As for reservations, this winter, we developed a new reservation system which enables visitors to pay their green fee directly online, and at very special rates. In fact, the rates vary depending on the season and time of the game. Reservations are possible without any time limit. So clients can plan their stay in Crans-Montana and be sure of playing the course they want to play.
What do you feel are the strong points of golf in Crans-Montana?
There are a lot of strong points. The spectacular setting, fresh, clean air, the quality and fame of the courses are all part of it, but I think that one of the things that the golfers appreciate the most is this magical atmosphere which comes from the fact that the courses are in the middle of the village. There aren’t many places in the world where the Number 1 hole and the green at Hole 18 are almost part of the town. This creates a special atmosphere because once golfers finish their game, they can walk into the resort and enjoy everything that Crans-Montana has to offer.
What would you recommend to someone who has never tried golf, and how should they go about trying it?
It’s very simple. The best way to discover golf is to take a first lesson with one of our instructors. The Club also organises introductory sessions, courses for beginners, children’s courses (4 years upwards). All of this information can be found on our website www.golfcrans.ch. We are really trying to democratize golf and get as many people as possible interested in this wonderful sport. Our office can give lots of advice to anyone who wants to start or just wants to try hitting a ball.
What are the important dates for 2016 on the golf courses?
There are lots of great competitions and entertainment throughout the season, but the main event is of course the Omega European Masters (1 to 4 September 2016) which is one of the biggest tournaments in Europe and the 2nd biggest sporting event in Switzerland. This umissable date amongst Swiss sporting events is unique and exceptional. In fact, the players on the European Tour love coming to Crans-Montana as everything is so close. Most players bring their families, and make the most of the activities that the resort offers. They also love the magical atmosphere in the village throughout the week.
What would you suggest combining with a game of golf on a day in the destination?
There are so many activities on offer, there really is something for everybody. Art, hiking, mountain biking, waterskiing, shopping, gastronomy, wine, and there are many more, golfers can enjoy everything that the resort has to offer before or after their game of golf. Personally, I would plan my week to play golf 3 or 4 times (alternating between the Ballesteros and the Nicklaus). I’d also make the most of my days between games to head to the Tiиche waterfalls (hiking), and to do a stunning mountain bike ride and perhaps spend a day at the Crans-Montana Beach Club to relax a little ! It’s just one of the many programmes possible in Crans-Montana.
Apart from golf, what else do you like about the Crans-Montana region?
The diversity that the region offers is immense. I love outdoor sports, so I’m in paradise as far as that’s concerned. But there’s also the village atmosphere, the different events all year round, good restaurants, and the great people you meet. The quality of life here is exceptional, and I’m really very lucky to be able to enjoy it, and to have my passion as my job.
Your best golf memory in Crans-Montana…
It’s difficult to say, there are so many, but one of my best memories so far was about 14 or 15 years ago, when I was caddying for one of the European Masters pro-ams. I was lucky enough to find myself in Severiano Ballesteros’ game, and I made the most of every second. Seve was an extraordinary, spectacular player, and it was a real privilige to see him at work. This experience only increased my love of this magical sport!
Crans-Montana Absolutely
On 19 May 2016, Crans-Montana Tourism & Congress announced the launch of a new brand concept for the destination, definied in part by a new slogan, Absolutely. Many new developments have come about through this new branding, redefining the identity of the destination: Positioning, values, philosophy, visuals and a chart aimed at business partners are just a few examples of the elements which aim to unite all stakeholders in the region with the same vision.
If you haven’t already seen them, check out the new video presenting the brand, and the new Crans-Montana website.
